About the origin of some Ukrainian bird names. - V.N. Grishchenko. - Berkut. 22 (2). 2013. - P. 165-167.
Origin of three Ukrainian bird names is discussed. The word “pirnykoza” using for grebes is a folk transformation of Polish name “perkoz”. “Chepura” was proposed by Ukrainian ornithologists for denomination of egrets. It is a Russian name actively used not long ago in scientific literature for different species of herons. The dialect name of stork “busol” is connected in origin with the grey colour but neither White Stork nor Black Stork have nothing grey. It is supposed that this word initially designated the Grey Heron or the Crane. [Ukrainian].
