Breeding finches of Mykolayiv region (South Ukraine). - K.A. Redinov. - Berkut. 22 (2). 2013. - P. 137-150.
11 species of finches were found in Mykolayiv region, 5 from them are breeding. We summarized data about distribution, expansion, number, breeding ecology, migrations and wintering of Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet and Hawfinch in 1900–2012. Author has been studied these birds in 1989–2012. In 2007–2008, breeding ecology was investigated on two study plots in young pine forests. During the last 80 years, finches have appreciably expanded in Mykolayiv region, they reached coasts of the Black Sea. Number of these species increased. This process continues. The expansion and number increasing are connected with the afforestation of steppes and creation of ponds. Finches nest in forest belts, insular forests, small groves and in settlements. All the species winter in the region. Mass growing of the Sunflower and some other cultures and wide distribution of Elaeagnus angustifolia favours successful wintering of finches in South Ukraine. On the study plots, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Linnet nested with high density. They started breeding very early. Times of beginning of the breeding period in Linnet are the earliest for Ukraine. Data on the breeding ecology of separate species are presented in tables and graphs. There were significant differences in the height of nest placing in pines: Linnet < Greenfinch < Goldfinch (Mann-Whitney Rank Sum Test). [Russian].
