River banks are a specific type of the landscape. Its differences are discussed. Bird communities of river banks were studied in the northern part of the Volga basin (Sura river and its tributaries) in 1964-1975. In the breeding period 41 bird species with the mean density 880 ind./10 km were counted. The Sand Martin dominates. Results of counts in the postbreeding period are presented in the Table. Problems of conservation of river banks and their birds are discussed. [Russian].
